Tamarind Fruit

Tamarind fruit is a tropical pod fruit known for its distinctive sweet-and-sour flavour. Although it is sometimes written as “tamarin,” the common English name is tamarind. The fruit grows in long, brown, brittle pods that contain a sticky dark pulp surrounding hard seeds. This pulp is widely used in cooking, especially in sauces, chutneys, curries, candies, drinks, and marinades. Fresh tamarind has a tangy taste, while sweeter varieties are often eaten as a snack. It also provides fibre and contains naturally occurring minerals and antioxidants. Tamarind paste or concentrate is commonly available in Canadian grocery stores, particularly in international food sections; use it sparingly, as its flavour can be quite strong.
